One day, I stumbled upon a maintenance hole cover that made me both think and laugh. Frustrated when I couldn’t get a good picture of it, I grabbed some paper, ink, and a brayer and made a rubbing instead. That experience sparked something in me. I started researching other maintenance hole covers and came up with a plan: travel to all 50 states and capture at least one rubbing of a utility cover that reflects the people who live there.
